Congratulations Laurel Davis- Recipient of the SECP Golden Seed Award

The AIHA-NCS would like to send a sincere Congratulations to Laurel Davis! She has been selected to be the recipient of the Golden Seed Award presented by the Students and Early Career Professionals Committee.

This award recognizes an individual who has:

 -        Made significant contributions to industrial hygiene in the area of student development, mentoring, or early career guidance,

-        Demonstrated a commitment to promoting the profession of industrial hygiene,

-        Demonstrated commitment to advancing the profession among students and early career professionals, and/or

-        Demonstrated commitment by providing guidance and mentorship to students or early career professionals.

Laurel Davis has been a member of the AIHA-NCS since 1993, when she joined while a graduate student at UC Berkeley. She served as AIHA-NCS President in 2009-2010, and now supports the section as volunteer coordinator, assists with membership management, and is an alternate board member on the California Industrial Hygiene Council.

Laurel, who is a former high school science teacher, has a passion for sharing knowledge about the industrial hygiene profession with others, especially students and early career professionals. She has participated in activities that reach out to K-12 students including Expanding Your Horizons, science fairs, and classroom presentations. As a mentor, Laurel regularly participates in the UC Berkeley School of Public Health Career Café to share the value and fulfillment that a career in industrial hygiene can bring. Laurel sees herself as a “connector” and is the person her friends and colleagues “go-to” whenever they know or hear of someone who is interested in the Environmental Health and Safety field. These mentoring encounters have resulted in several of these individuals getting jobs, starting graduate school (for industrial hygiene!), and joining the AIHA and the local section. Her mentoring work also extends to numerous summer interns at Berkeley Lab. Since 2014, Laurel has donated her time to teach ventilation principles and practices to graduate students at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. In addition to teaching, she sponsors students to attend the local section meetings as a means to encourage them to join and be active in the local section and national organization. Her passionate and long-standing sharing of industrial hygiene with students and early career professionals at all levels has resulted in being honored with the AIHA SECP Committee's Golden Seed Award.
